SPIME, a Silicon Valley based company with R&D offices in Chennai with a focus on offering location based solutions (LBS), has tied up with a leading Indian mobile operator for launching a mobile classified solution for consumers.
The solution, mobuynsell, will soon be launched in India. This is the first time such a solution is being offered to mobile customers across the Asia region.
"The product allows consumers to buy and sell any low- or high-value goods, just like `garage sales' in the US, targeting the neighborhood interest," says Spime's founder, Shankar Narayanan. He declined naming the operator, citing an agreement clause. Spime provides white labeled LBS initiatives to mobile operators, OEM/ODMs, application store providers, developers and semiconductor providers.
According to Shankar, registered customers of this mobile operator will be allotted a zip code. Using the code, the consumer will be able to put up goods for sale through SMS.
"This message would be sent to all registered consumers, in and around that region, of that mobile operator. Interested consumers can then connect with the seller through the operator and buy the product if they wish to," says Shankar.
The mobile operator is carrying out a trial test of the solution and is readying for a September 15 launch.
Spime and the mobile operator have entered into a revenue-sharing model, where the revenues accrue on two fronts -- a one-time registration fee, and through premium SMS charges for participating in the sale.

"We are keen to enable subscribers of other mobile operators residing in the region to participate in the sale and benefit too," Shankar added.
